Another way in which UNR has increased its state funding while UNLV has not been able to do so, relates to a category of funding outside the normal state budget for higher education: it is called "statewide programs support" and is distributed without any relation to enrollment or to the funding formula from what is purely a political process. Through successful lobbying efforts over the years, UNR was actually receiving nine times per student the level of support UNLV was receiving. Although UNLV began its own attempts to receive more "statewide program" support, in 2011, UNR had a budget of $5.2 million in this category compared to UNLV's $1.2 million despite the fact that UNLV is 2/3s larger than UNR!
