I was Chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher
Education from 2004 through 2009. I was a political neophyte and was
shocked at the inability of the Nevada Legislature to do anything to
improve Nevada’s
education system, especially higher education. Bill Raggio, who had
been given credit on a daily basis for building an education system in
this state that could compete with other states was a mystery to me.
The strength in the system had long faded into
outer space because of Raggio’s lack of leadership. Nevadans for 50 years have been oblivious of that fact. Raggio’s lack of
leadership in supporting Nevada’s education system was a primary reason for Nevada’s failure in developing a world-class education
system.
Seems like the entire State is infested with a lack of leadership. Instead of wasting time on nonsense like a fat tax, the legislature should be doing EVERYTHING to bring private sector jobs to the Silver State and good schools are part of the equation.
