CSN Part IV

RECALL THAT SOUTHERN NEVADA PRODUCES 75% OF THE STATE’S TAX REVENUE, HAS 75% OF THE STATE’S HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS AND YET RECEIVES ONLY 50% OF THE STATE’S FUNDING OF HIGHER EDUCATION.  The state needs to get out of the business of funding and operating community colleges.  Funding and operating must be left to the particular counties.

Education at CSN is the bargain of a lifetime at $72 per credit hour.  But yet that cost could be substantially reduced if the College of Southern Nevada got its fair share of Nevada’s tax revenue.  That will never happen until the state’s community college system is divided between the north and the south with each locale funding its own community colleges.

America’s community colleges began as offshoots of the K-12 system, FUNDED BY LOCAL TAX DOLLARS AND TUITION PAYMENTS.  Different college districts provide revenue for their local college in a variety of ways, through college-initiated bonding measures, annual negotiations with county governments and special college taxing districts.  LOCAL FUNDING IS NOT AS POLITICAL AS STATE FUNDING AND IS CONSIDERED MORE STABLE IN ECONOMIC DOWNTURNS.  Nationally, local support for community college operations averages about 18% to 20% of total funding.  Isn’t it time for local support of our colleges in Nevada?

FOR THIRTY YEARS THE INCOMPETENT SOUTHERN NEVADA LEGISLATORS, THOUGH HAVING A MAJORITY OF VOTES IN THE NEVADA LEGISLATURE, WERE OUT-SMARTED AND OUT-MANEUVERED BY THE NORTH. UNLV WAS SHORTED SIX-HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS AND THE COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA WAS SHORTED TWO-HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE MILLIONS DOLLARS IN TAX DISTRIBUTION.  THE SOUTHERN NEVADA COLLEGES WILL NEVER FULLY RECOVER.

THIS WEEK'S TWEETS DESCRIBE THE DAMAGE DONE TO CSN BECAUSE THE SOUTHERN NEVADA REGENTS AND LEGISLATORS FAILED MISERABLY TO PERFORM THE DUTIES ENTRUSTED TO THEM.
