DON’T FORGET THAT SOUTHERN NEVADA PRODUCES 75% OF THE STATE’S TAX REVENUE, HAS 75% OF THE HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS AND RECEIVES ONLY 50% OF THE STATE FUNDING FOR HIGHER EDUCATION.  CSN students make up 38% of Nevada’s higher education students. 

 

Work force development means research, commercializing technology and training skilled workers.  Workforce development focuses on low-skilled workers by creating more employees in a particular industry (not CEOs, but frontline workers).  Good workforce development policy often includes a holistic approach to remove social barriers that prevent many students from pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.

 

Community colleges do workforce development.  In Southern Nevada, CSN does this well.  It trains residents, some who have lived here for decades, to read, pass the high school equivalency test, use computers and pursue career skills.  CSN TEAMS UP WITH LOCAL EMPLOYERS TO PROVIDE CUSTOMIZED TRAINING FOR THOUSANDS OF SOUTHERN NEVADANS EACH YEAR.

 

North Carolina supports free training projects for approximately 200 companies that each creates 12 or more new jobs.  The New and Expanding Industry Training Program trains 20,000 residents per year through the state’s 58 community colleges and is the nation’s number one worker training program. 

 

Yet recent reports on Nevada’s economic and work force development barely touch upon the role of the community college.  Community colleges provide the wholesale change to transform Nevada’s workforce.  THE STATE’S FUNDING FOR WORKFORCE AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO SUPPORT PROGRAMS THAT WORK IS SHAMEFULLY LOW.

 

FOR THIRTY YEARS THE INCOMPETENT SOUTHERN NEVADA LEGISLATORS, THOUGH HAVING A MAJORITY OF VOTES IN THE NEVADA LEGISLATURE, WERE OUT-SMARTED AND OUT-MANEUVERED BY THE NORTH. UNLV WAS SHORTED SIX-HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS AND THE COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA WAS SHORTED TWO-HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-FIVE MILLIONS DOLLARS IN TAX DISTRIBUTION.  THE SOUTHERN NEVADA COLLEGES WILL NEVER FULLY RECOVER.
