UNLV & Wildfires

State funding support for world-class public universities, like Berkeley, the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia has been reduced as low as zero to 20%.  The top tier public universities learned many years ago it was necessary for them to become research universities, which are profit centers, to fund their operations.  UNLV and UNR are far behind on the curve in becoming self-sustaining.  Both must develop as world renowned research universities to earn income to survive and succeed.

Today Jim discusses the many attributes and plans of UNR and UNLV to make both universities competitive with the other world-class U.S. public universities.

Wildfires can be as destructive as they sound. They take light unexpectedly and fiercely. With stunning frequency they threaten communities, scar national forests, and wreak havoc across our Western landscape for decades. Environmental researcher Scott Abella has made it his life’s work to understand how fires occur in Western forests. He has devised ways to prevent them and championed programs to help forests recover. A research professor and director of the UNLV’s Desert and Dryland Forest Research Group, Abella travels throughout the West each summer to study firsthand the wildfire devastation.

Horsford's Ad

Have you seen the Horsford ad where he talks about his father being killed? I am very sorry that Steven suffered that loss and I know that all of you are too. But how is that incident relevant to him serving as our Congressman in Washington? The issue of his father’s death is, like all of Horsford’s issues not related to his competence to serve in Washington. If you talk with him you’ll understand that he has no capacity to serve in a position that requires complex and relevant thinking.

Traffic Lights

Statistics show the average American driver spends 6 months of his life sitting at red lights. I would bet that the average Las Vegan spends more than a year. The lack of coordination of traffic lights seems beyond the comprehensive of local officials. I spend more time each morning when I drive to work sitting at red lights than I do driving between them. Isn’t it time someone dealt with this problem?

UNLV faculty and students are on the forefront of discovery, and regularly make international news!  In a basin named Badwater on the edge of Death Valley National Park, UNLV microbiologist Dennis Bazylinski found a new magnetic bacteria with amazing biotech and commercialization potential. One of the largest grants in Nevada’s history was awarded to UNLV’s Center for Academic Enrichment and Outreach.  Each year this program coordinates the largest suite of federally funded TRIO and GEAR UP programs in the nation, helping 70,000 middle and high school students prepare for college:

Another Observation About Steven Horsford

Here’s another observation about Steven Horsford. If you want to tune in to a thought process that has no substance and is certainly not based on logic, talk to Steven Horsford sometime. About 20 seconds into the conversation when you look him straight into his eyes all you are going to see is the wallpaper behind him. Horsford has the misguided opinion that being “slick” can get anyone with no substance elected to public office. I can’t imagine any public office low enough to match Horsford’s qualifications. It hurts me to believe that your future and my future might be influenced in any way by the actions of this empty suit. Fortunately voters have a habit of seeing what a candidate actually has to offer. Horsford has nothing. I predict he will not beat Tarkanian.

UNLV has one of the leading programs in the world in Radiation Chemistry and Health Physics.  UNLV’s researchers are working with the Department of Energy, The Nevada Test Site, and a variety of private companies to ensure better nuclear security and to develop an array of biomedical technologies with industry leading companies like Varian.   One of our graduate students recently won a prestigious national award for developing new methods for reprocessing nuclear materials.
