Heller/Berkley Debate

The Heller/Berkley debate was boring. That was no surprise. But while Berkley may have some shortcomings, Heller fails to get by, by basic standards for honesty. I got the feeling during the whole debate that he knew if the public understood how he was going to damage it with his 12th century views that he would not win the election. Therefore, he made a point of misleading the public on his positions. Heller is simply intellectually dishonest and therefore under no circumstances would get my vote.

Oceguera

John Oceguera is one Democrat, and there are very few, that will not get my vote. Even if Joe Heck were far less qualified than he is, Oceguera would still not get my vote. As you may know, Oceguera graduated from the UNLV Boyd School of Law. I asked him why he continued to be a fireman when he had a professional degree. His answer was simple. The pay of a fireman is greater than the pay of a lawyer. Something is wrong with this picture and Oceguera has always known it. While being in the leadership of the fire departments and knowing the outrageous pay of fireman he did nothing to stop it. That leads me to believe that Oceguera will always put his own interests before those of Nevada. Don’t vote for him.

Horsford & Phone Calls.

It took me a long time but I finally figured out why Horsford doesn’t return phone calls. He knows that after thirty seconds of the conversation the person on the other end of the line will have correctly concluded that Horsford is all air.

Top Priorities?

The fate of our higher education research institutions (DRI, UNLV and UNR) lies at the center of an even more fundamental question. What kind of state do Nevadans want to live in and call home? Are good schools, great health care, adequate transportation and personal safety top priorities?  As you’ve seen over the last two weeks of my Tweets, you know that our research institutions are actively involved in innovative work in each of those areas. If these are priorities, then why have we done so little to support them financially?

Horsford & Cegavske

Steven Horsford and Barbara Cegavske are the two most incompetent Legislators to ever serve Nevada. Each party has one of these. The Republicans - Cegavske and Democrats - Horsford. If you vote the party line and you are a Democrat think about looking at the qualifications of the candidate rather than the party they represent. If I were forced to vote for either Horsford or Cegavske,
I would choose Cegavske.

Question About Nevada

Is Nevada evolving as a state or is it doomed to irrelevance and extinction? While I’ve seen Nevada’s higher education system continuously adapt to a new environment by streamlining operations, improving programs, and increasing student success, they will not succeed if the Nevada Legislature continues to remain entrenched. For years, they have had study after study showing them what level of investment they need to make our education system succeed by developing their research infrastructure.  And for years the only action they have taken was to commission another study that they will ignore.

Horsford | Too Late

Tax policy in Nevada controls every decision made by the Legislature and by the Governor on the operation of the state. Even so, Horsford did not discuss options to broaden the tax base until the legislative session was 75% through its term. It was then too late.

UNR | Commercialize Research

State funding support for world-class public universities, like Berkeley, the University of Michigan and the University of Virginia has been reduced as low as zero to 20%.  The top tier public universities learned many years ago it was necessary for them to become research universities, which are profit centers, to fund their operations.  UNLV and UNR are far behind on the curve in becoming self-sustaining.  Both must develop as world renowned research universities to earn income to survive and succeed.

Today Jim discusses the many attributes and plans of UNR and UNLV to make both universities competitive with the other world-class U.S. public universities.

A focused commitment to move innovation into the marketplace is exemplified by UNR’s efforts to advance and commercialize research. Led by the University’s Technology Transfer Office, a resource shared with DRI, patents and research commercialized by UNR are on the rise. UNR has licensed technologies that hold promise for the treatment for muscular dystrophy, allow rapid diagnosis of the leading cause of AIDS-related deaths in sub-Saharan Africa, support geothermal and petroleum exploration, contribute to sensing technology at our nation’s ports and support improved water treatment capabilities.

Horsford

During the legislative session, Horsford, a glib individual, made dozens of partisan speeches to move his political career forward rather than move the state forward.

UNR & Geothermal Energy

Nevada has the nation’s largest geothermal energy potential.  UNR research has helped develop sophisticated and complex exploration strategies for geothermal energy. UNR was selected from a consortium of top universities in the field of geothermal energy to host the National Geothermal Academy: http://newsroom.unr.edu/2012/07/25/universitys-national-geothermal-academy-recognized-for-outstanding-leadership/

Meeting

I feel blessed. After five years waiting for Steven Horsford to return a call my anxiety level has now dropped appreciably because Horsford has agreed that I can speak with him as soon as October 10. He is even coming to my office. In anticipation of this colossal event I’m sure I won’t be able to sleep during the week before the conversation.

I haven’t a clue of what he’ll say to me. I’m sure being the great political figure he is that I’ll be overwhelm.

I hope I remember what he looks like.

Protein Therapy Discovered Through UNSOM

A protein therapy discovered through UNSOM shows promise as a potential treatment for the most common form of Muscular Dystrophy. The naturally occurring protein has been shown to be an effective substitution therapy in mice.  The discovery is at the center of discussions by the international research and clinical community studying Muscular Dystrophy.

Standards

I like standards that guide me on the quality of  work I do. I believe we ought to do as much as we can to set standards for politicians. If we did so, then starting at the bottom I would use these standards to measure the future success of Nevada’s politicians.

5. Jim Gibbons F-----
4. Sharron Angle F ----
3. Barbara Cegavske F ---
2. John Oceguera F--
1. Steven Horsford F-

The lesson in this list is to suggest that you never use these five as standards for success.

Most Important Race

Probably the most important race in Nevada this year, other than the presidential race, is the race between Berkley and Heller. I don’t question Heller’s intelligence or experience but I am concerned about his work ethic. He is lazy, unmotivated, un-motivating and has little if any leadership ability. I can’t imagine him helping Nevada in any respect.

I Strongly Support

Being in the broadcasting business during the last ten years, I’ve spent several hours each day watching and learning about the political process in Nevada. That experience has brought me to the conclusion that in the 2012 Nevada elections I strongly support Democrat Dina Titus and Republican’s Mark Amodei, Joe Heck and Danny Tarkanian.

Appointment

Horsford’s highly positioned political friend read my Tweet about their failure to seek an appointment for the three of us. A time certain has been set for the three of us to meet next week.

I cannot imagine what Horsford and his mentor will say. If I had treated Jim Rogers the way Horsford had treated Jim Rogers, I think I would not have the nerve to look Rogers in the eye.

But you have to remember that Horsford is a fraud and an empty suit with a thought process that is totally different from yours and mine. I will keep you informed.

UNLV State Funding - Horsford

Horsford readily acknowledges that UNLV does not receive its fair share of state funding. But yet he did not propose a budget that fairly funded UNLV. Horsford’s opinion of his own creativity and importance would be an interesting case study by a group of psychologists and psychiatrists.
